Well, not necessarily just class room- i have seen it destroying manners, concentration, engagement and above all happiness. Cellphones made applications like whatsapp ubiquitous- to the point my parents became tech junkies overnight :). Cellphones made facebook ubiquitous as well, I have seen it first hand how it affects self-esteem and leads to unhappiness, this article presents similar arguments and this entry on wikipedia
